POSITION OVERVIEW:
Responsible for developing a classroom atmosphere where children can grow and develop in a safe and 
positive learning space. Candidates must have a passion for creating a safe and nurturing environment for 
children to further their learning experiences during summer camp, select school closure dates, and/or 
after elementary school hours.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Responsible for the planning and supervision of school-age children.
• Leads classroom teams in creating an atmosphere in which children can grow and develop; 
develops a classroom environment that is welcoming and emphasizes the importance of the child; 
includes furnishings and supplies which are attractive, durable and developmentally appropriate.
• Supervises and interacts with all children’s activities.
• Implements effective classroom management strategies.
• Responsible for preparing classroom materials in advance of children’s arrival and maintaining a 
clean classroom environment.
• Assists with the responsibility of ordering supplies needed for the program.
• Recommends maintenance and repairs as needed.
• Develops strong partnerships with the families.
• Leads the implementation of the Reggio Emilia Philosophy, focusing on in-depth studies and 
classroom explorations.
• Attends and participates in parent meetings and in-service training.
• Responsible for supervising persons assigned to assist their group who are not similarly qualified.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
School-age workers shall be at least 19 years of age and at least five years older than the oldest child 
with whom they work. Candidates must meet 1 of 3 education/experience requirements as listed below:
• Thirty semester hours (or 45 quarter hours) of credit from an accredited college or university with 
six semester hours (or nine quarter hours) related to school-age childcare, child development, 
elementary education, physical education, recreation, camping or other related fields.
• 1560 clock hours of experience in a recreational program or licensed day care center serving 
school-age children or a license exempt school-age childcare program operated by a public or 
private school, and six semester hours (or nine quarter hours) of credit from an accredited college 
or university related to school-age childcare, child development, elementary education, physical 
education, recreation, camping or other related fields.
• A high school diploma or equivalency certificate plus 3120 clock hours of experience in a 
recreational program, kindergarten, or licensed day care center serving school-age children or a 
license exempt school-age childcare program operated by a public or private school
