Teacher- Catholic Charities Diocese of Joliet

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Under the supervision of the Site Supervisor, the Teacher is responsible for adhering to the guidelines of Health and Human Services Head Start Performance Standards related to Early Childhood Services in conjunction with State Licensing Standards.
  2. The Teacher is responsible for leadership and management of the center during the absence of the Site Supervisor.
  3. It is the expectation that programmatic recruitment takes place throughout the community as specified and designated.
  4. Other duties as assigned within the guidelines of this position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Ensures a safe and healthy environment that follows the Head Start/Early Head Start Performance Standards and Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) Licensing Standards.
  2. Daily completion of Health and Safety checklist.
  3. Implements the principles of the Creative Curriculum approach based on a child-centered curriculum that encourages decision-making, cultural awareness, and exploration. Children are provided with choices of learning center activities, large and small groups, and individualized activities.
  4. Ensures that a variety of materials are kept safe and rotated frequently; with children’s materials separate from teacher supplies. In addition, maintain inventory of supplies and equipment, and submit requisition needs to site supervisor for approval.
  5. Provides an individual labeled space for each child.
  6. Guide and facilitate activities of the children, including: daily activities, field trips, selecting and arranging equipment and materials in the classroom.
  7. Ensures that the children are actively supervised at all times.
  8. Eats with children and provides appropriate social discussions and self-help skills during mealtime.
  9. Maintain a comprehensive and ongoing portfolio assessment for each child, including daily/weekly observations in each developmental area, examples of the child's work, and a developmental assessment that is completed on an ongoing basis throughout the program year.
  10. Enter data into the online data base system weekly.
  11. Facilitate weekly intentional planning meetings with teaching team. Include individual child goals, goals from child’s Individual Education Plan/Individual Family Service Plan (IEP/IFSP) for children with disabilities, program standards and goals from children’s learning as described in the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework, child data, intentional interactions, meaningful teaching practices.
  12. Develop individualized goals for children in collaboration with parents and update monthly.
  13. Offer ongoing opportunities for parent input on weekly lesson plans.
  14. Use the playground as an extension of the classroom; assures that the playground is safe.
  15. Provide social and emotional support to children in an organized classroom inclusive of intentional teacher-child interactions. (Specific behaviors as described in the Classroom Assessment Scoring System CLASS)
  16. Conduct screenings for all children within 45 days of the program year. Provide follow-up screenings and/or referrals as needed.
  17. Responsible for referral of behavioral, health, education, mental health and social service concerns to appropriate content area staff member.
  18. Implement children's IEP or IFSP seeking clarification for any aspects that are not well understood;
  19. Complete at minimum, two home visits and two parent teacher conferences to discuss the child's individual development and progress, assist the parents in developing observational skills and solicit parent observations as a method of keeping the parents engaged in their child’s development.
  20. Maintains and turns in accurate daily attendance and food count at point of service.
  21. Identifies and reports to the proper staff person about potential child abuse cases.
  22. Cooperate with other staff and classroom groups to maintain the smooth functioning of the center, which at times may require changes to meet the needs of the children.
  23. Participates in the Case Management Staffing with prepared notes from observations and assessments of children.
  24. Is a team member and effective role model, sets up written systems for sharing responsibilities: hold daily team meetings and share information.
  25. Implement appropriate behavior guidance techniques.
  26. Have a generally positive approach to other people, to themselves, and to the world.
  27. Complete and submit required forms and records in a timely and accurate fashion, e.g., lesson plans, time sheets, meal reports etc.
  28. Ensure that child education files are complete, accurate, and confidentially maintained.

Requirements
  1. Graduation from an accredited four year College or University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field. All degrees must come from a regionally accredited educational institution which has U.S. Department of Education approval. Thirty-six hours or more of college credits in Child Development or related field is required if the degree is in another field.
  2. Obtain and maintain at minimum, the Illinois Gateway ECE Credential Level 3 within 2 years of employment.
  3. Good written and verbal communication skills.
  4. Proficiency in the use Microsoft Office applications.
  5. Demonstrate the skill and competence to meet personnel qualifications as required in Part 407: Licensing Standards for Day Care Centers.
  6. One to three years’ experience working in a childcare setting is required.
  7. At least 18 years of age.
  8. Passage of complete background clearance, physical and Tuberculosis (TB) Test.
  9. Understanding and promoting the social teachings of Catholic Charities.
  10. A valid driver’s license, reliable means of transportation and proof of liability insurance is required.
