Early Childhood Education Teacher- Onward House


Under the general supervision of the Site Manager, is responsible for contributing to the development and implementation of an education plan that is designed to meet the needs of each individual child enrolled in the program in accordance with Head Start Program Performance Standards and NAEYC Standards.

What you’ll do:
Core duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned

1.     Ensure the implementation of the preschool program ensuring adherence to funding requirements as set by Head Start Performance Standards, NAEYC (National Education for the Education of Young Children) Standards and other licensing requirements.

2.     Create and maintain a safe environment which promotes the safety, trust, respect and security for children, staff and parents.

3.     Provides an overall classroom environment that is reflective of multi-ethnic populations, is conducive to enjoyment, relaxation and socialization and has well defined interest areas.

4.     Promotes recognition, acceptance and positive interactions among children and among staff.

5.     Prepare and implement lesson plans that encompass the intellectual, social, emotional and physical growth of all children.

6.     Oversee implementation of Creative Curriculum, NAEYC standards and Head Start Standards as it pertains to classroom program and ensure all information is entered into designated operating system (i.e., COPA, Teaching Strategies GOLD, portfolios, etc.)

7.     Supervise, monitor, coach and provide input in evaluation of co-teachers, volunteers, student teachers, etc.

8.     Explore new curriculum ideas by utilizing external resources that are age-appropriate.

9.     Oversee, instruct, monitor and evaluate outputs that result in the achievement of program outcomes as outlined in the Program Outcome Plan making recommendations to immediate supervisor as needed.

10.  Complete and submit required reports, documentation, etc. as it relates to Creative Curriculum, NAEYC and Head Start.

11.  Introduce and teach language development skills, concepts of numbers, colors, shapes, textures, science skills, music and rhythm, and arts and crafts.

12.  Supervise and participate in all activities, both in and out of the classroom.

13.  Utilize appropriate child development practices regarding guidance and discipline. 

14.  Oversee room arrangements, classroom equipment and maintenance of classroom environment. 

15.  Maintain appropriate staff/child ratio as required by DCFS licensing standards.

16.  Maintain records of child observations and evaluations.  Consult with the Site Manager when needed.

17.  Plan field trips; prepare children and follow-up on field trip activities.

18.  Establish effective working relationships with parents; maintain close, daily contact with parents of the children, and meet with them through annual parent/teacher conferences, home visits and on an individual basis as needed.

19.  Meet with and make referrals to Family Support Worker when appropriate.

20.  Meet with program staff for staffing on individual children.

21.  Work closely with special consultants and other resource people.

22.  Assist in other classrooms and programs as required by the agency.

23.  Attend and participate in staff meetings, parent meetings, and other meetings as necessary.

24.  Conduct weekly team meetings  to complete lesson plans, discuss children’s progress and individual needs, discuss check points, parent teacher conferences, home visits etc.

25.  Perform record keeping and other functions as assigned and report regularly to the Site Manager.

26.  Collaborate with other staff, volunteers, and/or neighborhood organizations with on-going program implementation and in developing special events.

27.  Maintain knowledge current in field, including attendance at seminars, workshops, and in-service training programs.

28.  Attend regular supervision sessions with supervisor.

29.  Assess program and recommend changes for improvement to the Site Manager.

Our Perfect Candidate
Education and Experience:

·         BA degree in Early childhood Education required
·         Gateways to opportunity Early Childhood Education (ECE) Level 5
·         Professional Educator Licensure with an endorsement in ECE (PEL)
·         Two to five years’ experience in teaching preschool children and working with parents
·         Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
·         First Aid/CPR certificate compliance or completion within first year of employment
·         Flexible in work schedule

  • Salary Range:  $35,000.00 - $47,000.00
