Certified Nursing Assistant- CNA- Maryville Academy

    About the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Position

    The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) assures the provision of quality health services for clients in the Children’s Healthcare Center (CHC) according to the standards and guidelines of the State of Illinois.  The CNA works under the supervision of, and takes directions from, a licensed nurse in the performance of tasks in the care of children at the CHC.  This position requires the consistent exercise of discretion and confidentiality.

    Responsibilities include: 

    • Follows all Maryville’s standard policies and procedures as well as all standard operating procedures for the CHC;
    • Assists patients with all personal hygiene and toileting needs;
    • Assists patients with comfort needs by transferring, lifting, moving and positioning patients as appropriate;
    • Assists with food preparation and patient feeding
    • Assists patients with educational and play activities
    • Takes and records patient vital signs and measures, and records patient intake and output as directed by the nurse;
    • Ensures patient clothing and all personal items are identified and laundered regularly
    • Ensures the unit’s linens and towels are laundered and put away
    • Maintains the cleanliness of patient rooms by changing linens, and cleaning equipment and toys daily 
    • Straightens and cleans laundry and break rooms;
    • Transports patients in a Maryville van, as needed;
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Education & Experience

    • A graduate of certified/basic nurse’s aide program;
    • Must be currently registered as a nurse’s aide in the State of Illinois;
    • Must be CPR certified;
    • Experience in a pediatric hospital is preferred;
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

    • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing;
    • Ability to assess, plan and evaluate patient care;
    • Able to identify sudden adverse developments in patient condition;
    • Requires knowledge of disease process;
    • Requires ability to assist with various nursing procedures such as trach suctioning, and GT feedings;
    • Ability to drive a passenger van.

    Physical Demands:

    • Required to frequently sit, stand, bend, stoop and walk, sometimes for extended periods;
    • Required to occasionally lift/move objects and/or youth weighing in excess of 40 pounds;
    • Must have visual, hearing, and learning capabilities sufficient to perform the essential functions defined above.
